Least Crowded Worldwide Holiday Spots

Least Crowded Worldwide Holiday Spots

As the world continues to deal with COVID-19, you might not be ready to take a holiday in a place that’s crowded with tourists. You may have to put your Australian travel insurance to use, which is not something anyone wants to do. Fortunately, there are some spectacular holiday locales that you’ll thoroughly enjoy that don’t involve crowds.

Naxos, Greece

Approximately halfway between Mykonos and Santorini lies Naxos, Greece, a hidden gem that doesn’t attract nearly as many tourists as its more famous neighbors. It’s also quite a bit cheaper as well for the same Greek experience. Naxos is the largest of the Cycladic Islands and is dotted with quaint traditional villages strewn among the lush mountains and sandy beaches. You’ll feel like a local in Naxos, especially when you see a donkey trotting down a cobblestone road or take a stroll through the vineyards and olive groves.

There are also plenty of ancient ruins to explore, hiking trails to conquer, and isolated beaches to relax, but you don’t have to rough it just because you’re visiting a less crowded island. There are luxurious spa resorts on the island that cater to your every need and you’ll really appreciate the locally-grown food and Greek hospitality. It’s the ideal location for a relaxed, sun-drenched Greek holiday.

Newfoundland, Canada

Even in its busy season, Newfoundland, Canada is one of the least crowded places in the world. You won’t find traffic jams or lines anywhere and you’ll easily fall into the slower pace of life. The draw to Newfoundland is its abundant wildlife and unspoiled wilderness and is the perfect holiday for any outdoor enthusiast. Along with the breathtaking scenery and quaint villages, visitors are bound to come across typical Canadian wildlife such as moose, caribou, lynx, and even a bear or two.

Whales are another attraction in Newfoundland and in the summer, you can take a kayak or boat tour to see humpbacks, orcas, finbacks, and minc whales as they breach and splash in the Atlantic Ocean. And while you’re there, you can relax on one of the many beaches in the area. Visit St. John, the oldest city in North America to explore important historical and cultural sites, top-rated museums, and lively George Street, where there are more bars and pubs per capita than on any other North American street.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Another island that is bound to be less crowded than other popular holiday destinations is Isle of Skye, Scotland. The scenery is simply jaw-dropping, with its towering, emerald-green mountains that drop down to seashell-covered beaches, gushing waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines. Its spectacular rock formations and impressive sea cliffs are a photographer’s dream.

Even though a bridge connects the island to the Scottish mainland, it’s not a popular destination for tourists, but it should be. There are few tourist attractions on the island, except in the main town of Portree, but that’s the point, especially if you’re looking for an isolated spot in which to spend your holiday. There’s plenty of wide-open spaces on Isle of Skye, and all of them are quintessential Scotland, without the crowds.

If you’re looking for a cooler place to visit during northern summers, which tend to be hot, Iceland could be the perfect destination. Iceland offers warm weather in the months of June, July, and August, though it never gets much higher than 15°C or so. While you probably won’t be frolicking in the ocean along the black sand beaches in Iceland, the cooler temperatures are excellent for all the hiking, biking, and horseback riding opportunities through some stunning landscapes.

If you need to warm up a bit, visit the Lake Myvatan Nature Baths in the northern part of Iceland, where you’ll find the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal volcanic spring that will soothe your tired muscles, refresh your skin, and renew your energy. Grab a blue lagoon cocktail from the swim up bar and you’ll be relaxing in something akin to heaven.

Most health officials still recommend staying away from crowds when you travel to avoid COVID-19 infection. The good news is there are plenty of spectacular uncrowded destinations that will leave you with memories that last a lifetime.
